A red kite swoops in to steal a piece of fat from a feeding buzzard (January 1997). The Buzzard is left looking at where his dinner was! I had set up a hide and put some meat out to tempt in kites. Unfortunately they would not land and they came in so fast there was no chance of a photo. I therefore turned my attention to a buzzard eating a piece of fat. Suddenly it jumped in the air, and by reflex I pressed the button. I never saw the kite - until I got the photos back!

Female Hen Harrier flies past the hide (New Year's Eve 1994). Tregaron bog is a huge expanse and Hen Harriers in winter hunt over great distances. Unlike the kites and buzzards, you cannot attract them in with food. To get this shot was really a question of putting the hours in. I spent about four hours each day for a week during the Chistmas holiday in the hide. It was freezing cold and I generally packed up for the day when my hands became so numb that I wondered if I'd be able to dismantle my camera equipment. Most of the time there was nothing to see, but occassionally a Hen Harrier could be seen in the distance. Just once, however, this female flew past within 30 yards of the hide and luckily my autofocus managed to lock onto it.

Sparrowhawk - common around the bog. This one was in fact photographed flying over Pagham Harbour (West Sussex) in September 2001.
