Fortuna Bay, South Georgia (March 2008)

The Polar Star is visible in this picture below. It is sailing round to meet us at Stromness. Fur seals are on the grass. We have walked up from the bay and through the fur seal colony.

We walked up the hill, and looking back to Fortuna Bay gave great views of snow covered mountains.

Presumably it is these mountains from which Skackleton, Worsley and Crean descended to get to Fortuna Bay after landing on the south side of South Georgia.

The pictures below show Fortuna Bay from the Polar Star. While the mountains behind are in the shadow of clouds, the bay is in bright sunshine. King Penguins were swimming around the ship, and some can be seen on the coastline in the picture below.
